I’m excited to share that I recently passed the AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate (SAA-C03) certification exam!
As someone who has worked with cloud technologies for several years, I pursued this certification to validate my AWS architecture knowledge and strengthen my understanding of designing secure, scalable, resilient, and cost-effective cloud solutions.
The SAA-C03 exam is widely regarded as one of the most valuable AWS certifications because it focuses less on memorizing services and more on solving real-world architectural problems. Success requires understanding the trade-offs between cost, performance, reliability, security, and operational excellence.

High-Yield AWS Services and Concepts
While every exam is different, I noticed a strong focus on service selection and architectural decision-making. Many questions presented multiple technically correct solutions, requiring you to identify the most cost-effective, scalable, or operationally efficient option.
Networking & Security
Networking forms the foundation of many exam scenarios. Hence, focus on understanding:
- VPCs, subnets, and route tables
- Internet Gateways and NAT Gateways
- Bastion Hosts
- Security Groups (stateful)
- Network ACLs (stateless)
- VPC Endpoints (Gateway and Interface)
- Hybrid connectivity with VPN and Direct Connect
Storage & DBs
This was one of the most heavily tested areas in my experience. The key topics are:
- Amazon S3
- Amazon RDS & Aurora
- DynamoDB
Compute & Scaling
Expect several questions around selecting the right compute option and balancing cost with availability. The important areas are:
- Auto Scaling Groups (ASGs)
- EC2 Purchasing Models
- Elastic Load Balancing
Event-Driven & Serverless Architecture
Serverless patterns continue to be a major player. Hence, we should focus on:
- AWS Lambda
- API Gateway
- SQS
- SNS

- Step Functions
How I Prepared?
My preparation strategy combined structured learning, hands-on experimentation, and practice exams.
- Structured Course – My primary source of learning was ExamPro’s AWS Solutions Architect Associate (SAA-C03) course.
- Hand-On Experience – Whenever I learned a new service or concept, I tried building something with it, like setting up ASGs or creating S3 lifecycle policies.
- Mock Exams – The most valuable part of my preparation was taking mock exams in ExamPro’s AWS Solutions Architect Associate (SAA-C03) course.
Exam Day Tips
- Flag Tough Questions – If you encounter a question, that seems overly complex, don’t spend excessive time on it. Select your best answer, flag it, and revisit it later. Since, you have only 130 minutes to answer 65 questions.
- Remember Keywords – Many questions contain clues such as most cost-effective, lowest operational overhead, highly available, etc. Look for them, since, these keywords often eliminate multiple answer choices in a jiffy.
- Prefer Test Center – I personally chose to take the exam at a Pearson VUE testing center. It helped me to avoid concerns like internet connectivity issues, webcam problems, room-scanning requirements. etc.
In-Summary
Earning the AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate (SAA-C03) certification was both challenging and rewarding.
More importantly, the preparation process helped me think more systematically about cloud architecture and sharpened my understanding of designing scalable, resilient, and cost-efficient solutions on AWS.
