Angular is a popular and powerful JavaScript framework for building dynamic web applications. It is a widely used JavaScript charting library. This library provides a wide range of interactive and customizable charts. Combining Angular with it lets you create stunning data visualizations in your web applications. In this blog, we will walk you through the process of implementing Highcharts in an Angular application.

Prerequisites

Before diving into the implementation, make sure you have the required prerequisites in place:

  1. Node.js and npm: Make sure that Node.js and npm are installed on your system. You can download and install them from the official website
  2. Angular CLI: Install the Angular CLI globally using npm with the next command: npm install -g @angular/cli
  3. Angular Project: Create a new Angular project using the Angular CLI with the next command: ng new angular-highcharts . You can choose default options for most of the questions during the project setup.
  4. Highcharts: You’ll need to include the Highcharts library in your project. You can add it via npm with the next command: npm install highcharts

Implementation Steps

Now that you have your Angular project and Highcharts installed, let’s continue with the implementation:

Step 1: Create a Component

In your Angular project, create a new component to show the chart. For this example, let’s call it highcharts-chart.

ng generate component highcharts-chart

Step 2: Include Highcharts in Your Component

Open the highcharts-chart.component.ts file and import Highcharts:

import * as Highcharts from 'highcharts';ng generate component highcharts-chart

Next, create a Highcharts chart configuration object. For instance, you can define a simple column chart as follows:

const chartOptions: Highcharts.Options = {
  chart: {
    type: 'column',
  },
  title: {
    text: 'Sample Column Chart',
  },
  series: [
    {
      name: 'Data Series',
      data: [1, 3, 2, 4, 5],
    },
  ],
};

Step 3: Display the Chart in the Template

Open the highcharts-chart.component.html file and include a highcharts-chart element where you want to show the chart:

<div id="highcharts-chart"></div>

Step 4: Render the Chart in the Component

Back in your highcharts-chart.component.ts file, show the Highcharts chart using the configuration object and the Highcharts.chart method:

ngOnInit() {
  Highcharts.chart('highcharts-chart', chartOptions);
}

Step 5: Style Your Chart

You can style your chart using CSS in the component’s CSS file (e.g., highcharts-chart.component.css), or you can change the options to control the chart’s appearance.

Step 6: Build and Run Your Application

Finally, build your Angular application using the next command:

ng build

Then, start your application:

ng serve

Conclusion

In this blog, we’ve demonstrated how to implement Highcharts in an Angular application. This combination lets you create powerful, interactive, and visually appealing data visualizations. By using a few simple steps, you can start incorporating Highcharts into your Angular projects. This will take your data visualization to the next level.
