Being a tester with years of experience. I’ve worked on several web application testing projects. Even though I’ve looked into automation testing and performance testing, no field has presented me with as many challenges and uncertainties as game testing. Although I am still in the process of adjusting, I received some advice for both myself and newcomers. I hope the following tips will help everyone overcome the initial uncertainties when entering game testing and move forward with more confidence in this field.

Video games are more popular than ever today. It is a popular entertainment it gives us boatloads of fun for hours. Especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of users of these games has exponentially increased.

What is game testing?

Amidst this exceeding popularity, gaming app testing has become of increased importance to promise flawless experiences for gamers.

Game testing is an important step in the game development process. Before being released to the general public, a game is thoroughly tested to ensure that it works as intended. The primary goals are to identify bugs and issues that may impact gameplay, performance, or overall user experience

Why is game testing important?

Video games today are interactive, with complex gaming mediums and multiple platforms, making them vulnerable to attack. These may go unnoticed and unresolved in the absence of a proper testing mechanism. Mobile game testing is critical to avoiding unexpected errors and glitches, avoiding player criticism, and losing significant sales due to poor experiences.

Tips for Participating in Game Testing

The important role of game testing in ensuring high-quality game releases also opens up many job opportunities in this field. Below are some basic steps that are necessary to help us have a good initially when entering game testing field:

Learning and Researching

A game has a lot of different aspects to test. However, this job frequently requires repetitive tasks across multiple games of the same type. The first prerequisite is a clear understanding of a tester’s role, the specific tasks that game testers must perform, and the requirements, game rules, and terminology used in games. Understanding our role will give us more confidence when we start the job.

Testing methods are also important. Learn about testing methods such as functional testing, user interaction testing, compatibility testing, etc. These methods will give us a comprehensive view on how to approach game testing.

Practice and Observation

The ability to observe and focus on small details is an important factor in determining whether we can become a skilled game tester. Play a variety of games and pay attention to the smallest details. This will help us develop a keen eye for detail in order to spot errors, minor inconsistencies in graphics, sound, game rules, gameplay, and user interface flaws. The comprehensiveness of the testing process ensures that even minor issues are addressed before the game is released.

Discrepancies in games are frequently very small, such as the color of a very faint shadow. Sometimes there is only a 1 or less than 1 second difference in sound. Without the ability to concentrate, we could easily miss these bugs.

Learn from the Experienced Testers

Connecting with experienced game testers or professional QAs. Their guidance and advice can help us overcome obstacles, understand industry best practices, and create effective testing strategies. Connecting with colleagues allows us to share our experiences, gain insights, and get support. We can learn not only from teammates, but also from assets, documents, old games with the same game type, and a list of common bugs from previous games.

The existing bug list is extremely useful. It allows us to focus more on the areas where errors occur frequently in a new game.

Manage Expectations and Challenges

Understand project scopes and goals, as well as the game’s development stage and target audience. Also, understand the game’s features that will be tested and the expected outcomes. This helps us focus and set reasonable expectations for testing coverage.

Aside from gaming knowledge and customer needs. Another important testing technique is for the tester to forget that he is a tester and play the game as if he were a real user, allowing them to evaluate the game’s quality. This allows them to test the game’s functional workflow as well as non-functional aspects such as entertainment value, difficulty level, level design, and so on. They can identify deficiencies that are not specified in the requirements or that customers may overlook.

Communicate Effectively

When in doubt, do not hesitate to seek clarification or guidance. Effective communication allows us to better understand tasks, expectations, and feedback. Aside from asking, please share constructive feedback, advice, and suggestions based on our testing experiences. Constructive feedback enhances game quality and demonstrates professionalism.

Conclusion

By following the advice above and actively participating in learning and networking opportunities. I believe we can overcome the initial reservations and establish ourselves as a competent and confident game tester. Remember that persistence, dedication to learning, and a proactive attitude are key to moving forward in this exciting field
