AI Testing: Outstanding advantages and challenges that cannot be ignored

In recent years, “AI Testing” (Testing with Artificial Intelligence) has gradually appeared more and more on technology forums, conferences and even in the software development roadmaps of many companies. However, this concept is still relatively new and is easily misunderstood as “AI is testing software instead of humans” or “AI makes Tester unemployed”. The truth is much deeper.

What is AI Testing?

AI Testing can be understood in two ways:

1. Testing systems with AI elements: testing a chatbot, recommendation system, AI medical imaging diagnosis, etc.

2. Using AI to support the testing process: for example, automatically generating test cases with AI, automatically detecting interface errors, detecting UI changes with computer vision, analyzing logs and intelligent test coverage.

This blog focuses on the second direction: applying AI in the software testing process.

What are the advantages of AI in Software Testing

1.  Accelerate Testing

AI can automatically analyze UI/UX, detecting small changes (like a button that is a few pixels off, or content that is cropped) that humans can easily miss, especially in Regression Testing or Visual Testing. For example, tools like Applitools use AI to compare interfaces at the pixel + context level.

2.   Create smart test cases

AI can examine real user behaviors (based on log or analytics data) to suggest the most important test cases – avoiding testers writing scenarios that rarely happen in real life.

3. 🔍 Automatically identify high-risk areas

Machine Learning can be trained to predict areas of source code with a high risk of errors, thereby prioritizing testing on important areas, instead of testing the entire application.

4. 💡 Reduce test script maintenance costs

AI-based test frameworks (such as Testim, Mabl, Functionize) are capable of automatically correcting test scripts when the UI changes slightly (change ID, change button position…), reducing the effort of script maintenance, an area where traditional test automation often fails.

Difficulties and challenges in AI Testing

1.  Lack of data or poor quality data

AI outcomes are only as reliable as the data behind them. If the application log lacks information, the test case lacks metadata, or the user behavior is incorrect → AI will make bad suggestions. Worse, you won’t realize it until the error occurs in production.

2. 🎯 Lack of explainability

AI can identify issues like defects or obsolete test cases, but the reasoning behind its decisions remains unclear. In environments that require high transparency such as healthcare, finance, or when auditing tests → AI becomes a weakness instead of an advantage.

3. 🛠️ Difficult to integrate with existing systems

Many testing systems are old, written in proprietary frameworks or heavily customized. Integrating a new AI testing tool into an existing CI/CD pipeline is not simple – especially when the team is not familiar with DevOps or the infrastructure is still manual.

4.  AI cannot replace the thinking of Tester

Although AI supports testing very strongly, AI still cannot understand the context, business goals, or the subtleties of UX like humans. Testers still play a role in critical thinking, designing tests that are appropriate for real risks.

Conclusion: AI Testing is an Opportunity, Not a Threat

AI Testing does not replace testers, but rather upgrades the role of testers: from manual test case runners → decision makers of testing strategies, tool selection, data analysis and process optimization. But don’t be too quick to think that integrating AI means you can “automate everything”. AI is only powerful when used at the right time, in the right way and with the right data. Think of AI as a smart companion – not a replacement – in the journey to improving software quality.
